**If you are looking for information on how to become an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), please visit www.iblce.org for information about the different pathways and their requirements. Programme DurationStudents are required to complete the course component (or
at least the majority of it) before starting practical training. Courses
run from September to April every year. For more information about the
duration of each course and the specific dates, please download the documents below.
Students normally complete the practical training component
within 18 months or less. There are
typically three intakes for practical training throughout the year (January,
May and September). Students are
required to commit to a minimum of 2 clinic shifts and a maximum of 3 clinic
shifts per week. The number of spaces
available for practical training is limited so it is recommended that you contact
us at studentadmissions@nbci.ca to arrange a
meeting well in advance.
Tuition & Fees:
Non-refundable registration fee: $30.00
Lactation Medicine Programme tuition fee: $1850.00 (for courses) + $5000.00 (for
practical training)
If you are pursuing IBLCE’s Pathway 3, the tuition fee is
$7800.00. This fee covers the standard
tuition for the Lactation Medicine Programme as well as the fee for the
additional training that is specific for Pathway 3 students.
- Please note that this fee covers practical training
for a maximum of 20 months. If students are
unable to complete the practical requirements during those 20 months, they will
be required to pay $200 for every
additional month required until completion.
- Tuition fees are payable in installments throughout the course of your training.

refund policy is applied when a student, either voluntarily or
involuntarily, is no longer part of the full Lactation Medicine
programme, or a specific course or courses.
Once the course starts, no refund will be issued. If a course has not yet started, no tuition charges will be incurred.

If you are working towards your IBCLC, we strongly recommend that you
complete IBLCE's "General Education requirements" before you enroll in cbe's Lactation Medicine Programme. The list below includes the courses that are IBLCE higher education prerequisites for writing the IBCLC exam. For more information about IBLCE's "General Education requirements" and whether or not they apply to you, please visit www.iblce.org. 8 Prerequisite Higher Education Subjects: - Biology
- Human Anatomy
- Human Physiology
- Infant and Child Growth and Development
- Nutrition
- Psychology or Counseling or Communication Skills
- Introduction to Research
- Sociology or Cultural Sensitivity of Cultural Anthropology
Please note that these courses must be completed before you can write the exam and for this reason we strongly recommend that any student wishing to obtain their IBCLC complete these courses before enrolling in cbe's Lactation Medicine Programme. There are also 6 continuing education subjects that must be completed before writing the IBLCE exam, these can be found by visiting www.iblce.org. LACTATION MEDICINE PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS:Clinical Path- Observation period+a minimum of 500 clinical hours at the Newman Breastfeeding Centre
- Completion of all BASIC and ADVANCED coursework
- Completion of all independent projects and assignments:
- 1 research assignment to be presented
- 1 patient case presentation
- Teacher's Assistant for 1 lecture
- Attend 1 La Leche League meeting
- Observe at 1 other breastfeeding clinic
- Practical examination of clinical skills
If also pursuing IBLCE’s Pathways, students must complete the following
for: Pathway 1: - cbe Requirements 1-4
- Additional 500 clinical hours (total of 1000 clinical hours)
Pathway 3:
- cbe Requirements 1-2
- All clinical hours must be directly supervised by a recertified IBCLC
- Completion of all independent projects and assignments:
- 1 research assignment to be presented or handed in every 4 months
- 1 written case report of publishable quality
- 1 long-term research project
- 3 patient case presentation
- Teacher's Assistant for 3 lectures
- Attend 3 La Leche League meetings
- Attend 2 prenatal breastfeeding classes
- Attend 1 other type of mother's support group
- Observe at 2 other breastfeeding clinics
- 2 hospital visits within the first 24-48 hours
- Practical examination of clinical skills

Advanced Clinical Path (only for those who are already Lactation Consultants)
- Observation period+a minimum of 150 clinical hours at the Newman Breastfeeding Centre
- Completion of all ADVANCED coursework & the Clinical Practice course
- Practical examination of clinical skills
